Most apps train recognition: you see Japanese and pick the right answer. Zenshin trains production: you type Japanese from memory, conjugate verbs, and write full sentences. That's harder. It's also what conversation actually asks of you.
The loop is simple: recall (pull words out), use (put them in sentences), review (come back when you're about to forget). Every session runs some version of that.
Recognition feels like knowing a word because it looks familiar. Recall is producing it with nothing on screen to help. Research backs recall for long-term retention; you don't need the citations here. You've felt the gap yourself if you've ever read a word a hundred times and still blanked when typing it.
Rule of thumb: if you didn't have to retrieve it, you probably didn't learn it yet.
