は vs が: The Difference Explained
は marks the topic (what we are talking about); が often marks the subject or introduces new information. Both are essential particles.
は (wa): topic marker
は sets the frame for the sentence: “As for X…” It does not always mean the grammatical subject. Example: 私は学生です (As for me, I am a student).
が (ga): subject / new info
が often highlights who/what does the action or appears for the first time: 猫がいます (There is a cat / A cat exists). In questions, が marks the unknown subject: 誰が来ますか。
Quick comparison
Use は for known topics and contrast. Use が for descriptions, existence, ability, and when identifying something new.
- 私は田中です: I am Tanaka (topic: me)
- 誰が来ましたか: Who came?
- 雨が降っています: It is raining (rain is the subject)
